impressionism and other influences
Sally Herriott is a British-Canadian artist based in Stockholm, Sweden. Her work centers on nature, depicting both untamed environments and the intersections between natural elements and human-made structures. While her landscapes may appear familiar, her art is distinguished by its atmospheric qualities and narrative depth.
Herriott’s paintings are characterized by visible brushstrokes, vibrant colors, dynamic compositions, and scenes that convey shifting light and movement. Her style draws influence from Impressionism, Post-impressionism and Canadian landscape artists such as Tom Thomson and the Group of Seven, who sought to express the evolving landscape and spirit of Canada’s wilderness through emotional resonance. Herriott frequently paints outdoors on small panels, working rapidly to capture the essence of a location before developing these studies into larger works in her studio.
She frequently depicts coastlines, solitary trees, and fleeting moments when light casts shadows or reflects on water. By concentrating on understated subjects, her landscapes evoke a sense of familiarity and nostalgia.

Observe. Sketch. Paint.
My work responds to the landscape.
I'm less interested in faithfully recreating a copy of it.
Instead I paint what I feel in that moment.
To tell a story through
color, contrast and rhythm.
